![]() I am not a pet! Before you say “I want one” or even click “like” on one of the countless internet videos, know that the illegal pet trade is one of the most horrific threats to lorises-and they make terrible pets!Īs noted, they are nocturnal, so bright light is highly stressful for them. This skill is facilitated by extra vascular bundles in its arms and legs called retia mirabilia, which allow blood to flow to its extremities so it doesn’t experience “pins and needles” from lack of circulation. A pygmy slow loris can hang still from a branch for hours, if necessary. With those big, round night vision eyes, small dark ears, a wet nose, fluffy russet coat with snappy white accents, and plump little gripping digits, the pygmy slow loris is likely the most adorable creature you’ll never see in its native habitat. Its tail is short to nonexistent, but its dexterous hands (with opposable thumbs) and feet make climbing and hanging around in trees a breeze. The pygmy slow loris has a short, dense, wooly coat that varies between light brownish to deep reddish brown, with a white chest and belly, and light-colored outlines on its face. Also enhancing its night vision is a reflective layer of tissue behind the retina called the tapetum lucidum-you may recognize it as eyeshine. Packed with retinal rods in its forward-facing eyes, it has sharp depth perception, even among the dim trees. As a nocturnal hunter and forager, it needs those big eyes to detect its next meal. ![]() The first thing you notice on a pygmy slow loris is its huge, round eyes. Female lorises sometimes “park” their youngsters while they feed, so they whip up the toxic elixir and lick the little one’s fur to deter predators. The loris produces a secretion from glands on the insides of its elbows, which, when mixed with its saliva, serves to venomize its bite. They often hang upside-down by their feet to free up both hands to eat with.īut what really gives the loris a leg up on the simian competition is that it is the only known venomous primate, a highly unusual characteristic among mammals. This species is arboreal, omnivorous, precocial, and generally solitary, with a penchant for polygyny come breeding season. What little is known about the pygmy slow loris Nycticebus pygmaeus is intriguing. Add to that an uncanny ability to vanish into the trees by staying still for extended lengths of time, as well as producing venom on demand, and you have the most endangered of the non-lemur prosimians: the pygmy slow loris. One way for a pint-sized primate to avoid predators and competition for resources is to tuck in by day, rolled into a tight ball, and forage for food at night, stretching slowly from branch to branch. ![]()

A few ideas:Ī) Slow scales with tuner: Work on slow, 2-octave scales with a tuner. I recommend taking it head-on from the very beginning. Several method books are available that contain a nice concentration of this material.Ĥ) Intonation-Intonation is one of the biggest challenges in playing alto trombone. It’s a little tedious, but I have had some success using it with students.ĭ) Experience: Obviously, the more you play through music, the better you’re going to get at reading it. A few suggestions for this initial phase:ģ) Reading-One of the biggest initial obstacles in learning the alto trombone is simply learning to read music with a new set of positions. There are many other great ones as well virtually all of the world’s top tenor trombonists have recorded on alto as well as tenor.Ģ) Initial Familiarity-When I teach alto trombone, I usually recommend that students take a couple of days just to become familiar with the instrument. Finesse, not muscle!Ĭ) Recordings: Listening to recordings of alto trombone will help establish this new sound concept. In my experience, the students who have the hardest time establishing their alto sound are the ones fighting hardest to make the alto sound like a large-bore tenor!ī) Lighter: Going from tenor to alto requires a lighter approach, which should include less articulation, slightly less air, and a generally lighter touch. The sound will be brighter–don’t fight it! Think of the difference between alto and tenor trombone as similar to the difference between trumpet and piccolo trumpet. Drawn from my own playing experience, research, and 17 years of full-time college teaching, here are a few suggestions for learning the alto trombone.ġ) Sound Concept-Developing a good sound concept for the alto trombone is important from the beginning.Ī) Brighter: In my opinion, the alto sound should be more trumpet-like than the tenor trombone sound. ![]() ![]() ![]() PKCS#12/PFX Format – Fusion of Fortitude: Many platforms, from Microsoft Windows to Java Tomcat, embrace the P7B narrative, finding comfort in its versatility. Tyr, the god associated with this aett, is a figure of justice, law, and righteous warfare in Norse mythology. It’s the moment of enlightenment that comes after a long period of struggle and growth. The Othala rune, as the last rune in this aett, symbolizes the culmination of this journey. The third aett is the last of the three aettir in the Elder Futhark, and it represents the final stage of a journey or process. This aett is named after the god of justice and law, Tyr, and it carries themes of balance, order, and right action. The Othala rune belongs to the third aett of the Elder Futhark, also known as Tyr’s aett. However, its themes of heritage and ancestry could be loosely associated with the Allfather, the wise Odin, who values wisdom and knowledge, including that of our ancestors. There are no specific gods or goddesses directly associated with the Othala rune in the Norse pantheon. This is the term used for the first borns’ right to inherit farm land the family owns and is law. In modern Norwegian, we still have the term ‘Odel’ (derived from Othala). In the context of the Proto-Germanic language, the term ‘ōþalą’ or ‘heritage’ likely referred to the ancestral property passed down through generations. It represents the connection to our ancestors, our roots, and our past. The Othala rune is a symbol of heritage, but its meaning goes beyond the literal concept of property. Whether you’re speaking Old Norse, Old English, or Gothic, the Othala rune will still represent the ‘o’ sound. As the Germanic languages evolved, this phonetic value remained largely consistent. In the Proto-Germanic language, the Othala rune represented the ‘o’ sound. These variations, though minor, add to the rich tapestry of runic history. However, some variations exist, such as the rune being drawn with curved lines instead of straight ones. Historically, the design of the Othala rune has remained fairly consistent. This design is thought to symbolize a homestead or a piece of land, reflecting the rune’s meaning of heritage and property. It resembles a diamond where the bottom lines extend, giving it a firm platform. The Othala rune is visually simple, yet striking. ![]() ![]() This is a testament to the rune’s symbolic association with ancestral property and inheritance. It stems from the Proto-Germanic word ‘ōþalą’, which means ‘heritage’ or ‘estate’. The etymology of ‘Othala’ is interesting. Like its sibling runes, craftsmen etched the Othala rune into stone, wood, and metal, using it as a means of communication and a tool for magic. The Elder Futhark, as archaeological evidence suggests, found its use across a broad geographic range, extending from Scandinavia to continental Europe. The name ‘Othala’ in Old Norse translates to ‘heritage’ or ‘ancestral property’, symbolizing the connection to our ancestors and our roots. It’s the last rune in the Elder Futhark sequence, following Dagaz. Among these runes, Othala holds a special place. It’s like a time capsule, preserving the thoughts and beliefs of our ancestors. The Elder Futhark, a runic system that predates the Viking Age, is a fascinating subject.
